About Me

I love books. I eat, ( well, I don’t really eat them) sleep and breathe them. Someday I will write my own. Do I have a lot of time to read? Not really. Do I sneak in time to read. Yes. As much as I can. I read while drying my hair, before going to bed at night, while sitting in the car and basically any place that requires waiting. I have an unhealthy book habit, well er, there’s also the chocolate habit. My library is small, but bursts with color and an eclectic taste in books. I recommend, I review, and I write. Sometimes I forget to review. Although I try to keep up. When I review, I take my time with a book because it is unique or  because It has fallen into my hands unexpectedly, asking for a read. I tend to write how I feel, using my instincts as a reader. I celebrate début novels and have reviewed quite a few. I could very easily spend the rest of my life writing about the books I read, reading the books I love, and losing myself in an extraordinarily large library.

I’m a mummy of two,  I’m also an art teacher. I meditate, run and do yoga. My family and I live a gluten-free life in support of my oldest, who is severely allergic(not celiac) to gluten/wheat and all things that bear cross contaminants of it : oat, garbanzo, barley etc.

I enjoy Colin Firth. I really do. Every now and then I like to write him strange ( some would say delusional) letters of conversations that pop -up in my head. I would love to have a cup of tea with him- um, I would drink hot chocolate, he would most likely drink tea- chat about the books he likes to read, film roles and the humanitarian work he does with his beautiful wife. He may not like it, but he epitomizes Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. It is a book close to my heart.

My life is a series of lessons; most of them learned by watching my beautiful family in action. I live a very contented life somewhere North of the Golden Gate Bridge surrounded by mountains and wineries. I don’t drink a lot of wine anymore, er, I could if I really wanted to… I do consume copious amounts of chocolate. Did I mention I like chocolate?

Meditation is a huge part of my day-whether I am sitting, standing or driving. I am always a ‘work in progress’; constantly seeking to be focused, loving, kind and compassionate.

I thank you for your visits, comments and all of the follows I’ve received. Blogging is a joy, blogging about books is bliss, my friends in the blogosphere are pretty fantastic; they support, build community and are some of the most exceptional people I have met(virtually). Lucky me.

Mummy, can you recommend any books about meditation? I really want to learn how to but not sure where to start.

    1. Hi Christina,
I haven’t posted a lot on meditation, although it is a constant in my life. I always get excited when someone asks me about where to start. There’s one particular book that comes to mind: It is called ‘Mindfulness in Plain English’ by Bhante Gunaratana. I think you can get it on Amazon or on the Wisdom publications website. It’s really simple and well explained. However, you can still take baby steps on your own and begin by sitting in a quiet place; even a peaceful garden would do. Watch how you breathe – in and out. As you begin to do this, random thoughts will occupy your mind, from dinner to books to anything that is going on in your life. Your goal is to get the mind to settle for a short time and focus only on the breath. No matter what, don’t get frustrated. It takes time and it’s not really about how long you sit, it is how well your mind adjusts to being present. If I think of any other books, I will definitely let you know.

Let’s not forget the importance of having a good circle of other people to sit with in meditation. Somehow there’s an extra energy that makes the practice a lot easier. That’s how I came to Quaker worship, after a residency in a yoga ashram. Actually, the first time I did yoga, I thought I was going to a lecture — boy, was I in for a surprise! Read all you want, but there’s no substitute for getting in the water and swimming. Cheers!

Oh … I have heard a rumor that P Diddy is going to be on Downton. REALLY?!?!?!?!??

    1. It is exactly that Katie… Sigh. The children have kept me so busy, I have had no time for anything, but ooooh you know how you love spreadsheets… Er, well not love, but obsessed with *cheeky grin*
I’ve fallen in love with PowerPoint… The joys…I can number them for you, but you might chase me away..

I saw that blurb about P Diddy too. Same reaction what???? Oh no, I hope Downton isn’t going too mainstream. I would not like it. Btw, I just watched a small series called ‘ The Bletchly Circle’ women detectives.. Post war. So lovely. Have you seen?

I have used powerpoint too nod nods. And you can make it do cool things. The way the next slide comes in and all. And you can add music, and links (if you have internet connection … but that is always a tricky thing). And you can have the slides timed in a certain way…nods. I have to pull together proposal slides sometimes….but I actually tend to keep them simple, as I am never the one giving the presentation…so the person who uses it would need to practice if I made it too fancy…so I don’t lol.

What are you using your slides for?

As for Downton … I just saw an ad last night. They were saying an encore of Season 1 was going to be done in Dec? And of season 2 in Jan? That is sooo far in advance this notice. That does not mean they are holding back on the new episodes are they? *stomps feet*

As for the Bletchly Circle…nod nods. I saw the first one and was like…I HAVE TO WATCH THE REST. But I missed it grrrrrr. And at first I thought one of the actresses was Mrs Hughs from Downton! lol

  20. I read quite a lot on the internet but It is JUST not the same as holding the printed word in your hands. I love the smell of books.
Before I moved to Florida and lost my belongings (And my son’s) I had bookcases filled with books all through the house. I lost count of the hundreds…no thousands of books I have read. I would love to have this house filled to the rafters with books.
I miss being able to write and write well. Having my short stories read by others was something I loved seeing.
So thank you for your special blog. Your comments.

Apologies for the late reply to your comment! Ah, yes, Marvel/DC is one of the big loves of my life, besides books and writing—that and TWD. Harry Potter, too. I have a lot of loves, apparently. We share those interests, and another apparently: Colin Firth. He’s an amazing actor, especially in Kingsman: Secret Service. I never thought he’d be the type to star in that kind of film, but it is perfect. Lovely blog, and it’s nice to meet you!
