Celebrating Downton Abbey – Season three is here

When my friend and blogger     Monica Medina of http://monicastangledweb.com/        had the brilliant idea that we should do a tandem post celebrating our love for Downton Abbey, I jumped to it. Er, well, I leaped actually, I typed my answer faster than my keyboard would allow. You see, I am a wee bit obsessed. We share this bond, a love, if you will, for this creative drama that began as a gentle series to keep those of us who are devoted British period drama enthusiasts, busy. Julian Fellowes smartly done, witty parody of privileged life in the post Edwardian 1900’s, and his brilliant juxtaposition of dynamics between the aristocratic Crawley family and the servants downstairs, at magnificent Downton Abbey, has consumed my Sunday nights like no other show could. With a superbly chosen cast, this sweet but glamorous series has taken off, flying, soaring in popularity, charm and indelible wit.

I have been waiting impatiently for season three, since season two ended. And now, it is almost here, well, Sunday, January 6 at 9pm to be exact. I will have tucked my children into bed, lunches will be ready for school the next day, I will have washed dinner things, cleaned up, wiped counters, in my warm pajamas and under the covers, ready for episode one.

At this point, I am obsessively thinking about story lines and where they might lead this season. Will Bates finally come home from prison to be with Anna? He has to. They are without a doubt one of my favorite couples. Will his name be cleared? Will he be valet again or will the ambitious Thomas find himself in the position he has long coveted? it is a given that we will see a wedding after all Mary and Matthew have found their way to each other after an arduous journey. That proposal last season, took my breath away. Will Daisy find more responsibility or will she have a different role? With Shirley MacLaine taking on Cora’s mother’s role, she will excite us, going toe to toe, exchanging witty barbs with the brilliant Maggie Smith. I can’t wait. I adore Maggie Smith. I laugh out aloud for no apparent reason when I see her. She is the epitome of a Dowager Countess. So what do you think?  will Sybil return home with Branson? I think she will. Will Edith finally find someone special? Oh but there’s more. I ought to stop, but I can’t, for I keep thinking they have to introduce a new footman, a maid, and at least one new character. Will they? I have seen cast photos with a few new faces, so I think they will. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts after Sunday’s episode.

Please pop over and visit Monica, at http://monicastangledweb.com/ she will have a brilliant post for you to read.

MM, I love this show and I’m so glad we wrote about it together. If you ask me, the only thing that could make it even better is if Colin Firth starred in it, too. And, FYI, like you I came across a couple of spoilers, too, in doing my research for my post. Oh, the agony of finding out too soon! 😉

    1. Monica, I love that you and I have this in common as well. How funny that you mention Colin, I was thinking the same thing as I wrote out my post. He would completely fit into the era. Regency was such a breeze for him, I have no doubt after seeing that movie with Jessica Beil – Easy Virtue- he would be perfect. Ugh those spoilers really spoiled it for me. I’m trying not to think about it. 🙂 I am going to be doing some bicentinery celebration posts on Pride and Prejudice and Jane Austen. We have the whole year to celebrate but I’m thinking you and I should do another post together later.

Ohhhhhhhhh….I am in LOVE with this series too! I RARELY watch tele … but this one…oh. my. goodness. I want to be transported there.

I want to say that Anna and Mr. Bates are at the heart of the show … but in reality, it is Mr. Carson and Miss Hughes …. or is it Lord and Lady Grantham … or the Dowager Countess … or… or …

By the way, I have never figured out why they are Lord and Lady Grantham … but their names are Crawley.

I cannot wait for it to start tonight! I am addicted …. errr… perhaps tis better to say that I am a ‘dedicated’ fan lol. (ohh…now I can hear the opening music playing in me head.)

    1. Oh my gosh Katie, a fellow Downton fan. Welcome, welcome. So glad you love it as well. I absolutely love period drama and I can’t get enough of Downton. Bates and Anna for me too, although Mary and Matthew are as close. I love the Dowager countess, her lines are the best and most perfect. I can’t wait to hear what you think of tonight’s episode.

Ohh … I loved that the Countess was the one that really got Tom Bransom and Lady Sybil to come to Downton … it’s interesting how the Dowager was mostly likely the one to resist the crossing of stations … but is now the one that holds the trappings of family as ritual even in this instance. I just love her character.

      2. Katie, I can’t wait for next week. I hope you and I can chat again after we watch. I love it when you can have a good talk about what happened on a favorite show. I normally like to watch The Golden Globes, see what films are nominated, but I don’t think I will give up Downton 🙂

Wheee! I love this show too and I’m so looking forward to the season 3 premiere at tonight (4 hours away here).
Meanwhile, I got caught up in the new Upstairs, Downstairs series, too and am sorry that it was cancelled after only two seasons, pfft. They say it just couldn’t compete with Downton. Hmm, can’t we have both?
By the way, I second Monica’s wish re Colin Firth making at least a guest appearance. Although if he did, it’ll be impossible to believe his character doesn’t steal every woman’s heart in Downton. 😉

    1. What did you think of last night Tita? I loved it, it made me laugh, made me happy and since I came across some spoilers while browsing, I was sad too. I saw bits and pieces of the Upstairs, Downstairs series and really liked it, I can see why it couldn’t compete with Downton Abbey though. Downton is so glamorous isn’t it? Ah now if Colin were to make an appearance, It would just make my day, well all my days:-) I watched the premiere last night with a huge smile, I would DVR and watch it a million times if Colin came on. Can you just imagine?

I loved Mary’s last line! (”I would hate to be unpredictable.”) I thought Shirley MacLaine’s character had some good lines but Dame Maggie as always blew everyone away, haha. Only she could have dealt with Branson and the morning coat issue. 🙂 Can’t wait for next week!

      2. Me too, me too. I loved it. 🙂 I was in fits of laughter over the morning coat incident. So fantastic is Maggie Smith. I thought Shirley MacLaine was just what they needed to shake things up but I love my regular Downton cast, so overall, it was a fantastic season opener.

I am smiling. I only started watching Downton Abbey last year. Until then we didn’t watch TV at home except movies through Netflix.
I was envious of friends talking about the show. I KNEW I WOULD LIKE IT. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.
So recently I saw the whole series from start to finish …well the end of this season.

    1. Isn’t it the most fantastic show? I just love Downton. I am sad we have just one season left but I will enjoy it to the maximum.
I do movies through Netflix too 🙂
I am now watching a new series – Poldark. It will have to hold me until Downton begins again.
